Internet Marketing Strategy - SEO through Forums and Blogs
Tonight in our Night Owls training for the Veretekk system, we started a several weeks series of classes on Search Engine Optimization. We started off talking about how SEO is a long-term part of an Internet marketing strategy because it takes some time to see the results you want to achieve - top placement in the major search engines for specific keywords.
The first step in any SEO strategy is selecting the keywords you want to optimize for. There is some art involved here, because you must achieve a balance between words that are searched frequently (and also generally have hundreds of millions of sites with the same keywords) and words that are very "vertically targeted", meaning you don't want everyone who searches for "marketing" to be delivered to your site, just those who search for "automated internet marketing" or "automated marketing system".
The art is coming up with targeted keywords. The science is finding the keywords that people are actually searching for. My motto is "If no one is looking for you, they're NOT going to find you!" So your challenge is to "be" or offer what people want to find. Sounds simple, right?
We have some tools available to help us make our choices. Traffic Travis is a free tool that I recommend using like this: type in a broad search criteria, like "marketing" and let the selector tool tell you what specific key phrases people actually search for, like "search engine marketing" or "internet marketing article". You will notice that the tool also will tell you how many searches have been performed for that keyword over the past month or 30 days.
Once you have chosen a few targeted (and very focused) keywords select ONE of them to be your primary keyword for your site.
A couple of definitions are in order here.
A keyword can be either a single word or a phrase. In other words, "marketing" is a keyword and "internet marketing strategy" is a keyword.
By "very focused" I mean that your keywords should contain similar words like this: "internet marketing, marketing strategy, internet marketing tool" and NOT like this: "internet marketing, work from home, pet accessories". See what I mean?
Now, once you have chosen your keywords for your site, you can start having some fun!
What you want to do is find (or start your own) some forums and blogs where you can post articles and comments. The foremost thing to keep in mind here is that WHENEVER you are writing on the Internet, you are writing for the search engine spiders. ALWAYS! And when you are "feeding spiders" you need to feed them food they like.
What to spiders like to eat? Keywords and Fresh Content!
So as you are writing your articles, posts and comments, Remember the Keywords! You may not be able to include a link to your site in your actual post, but most forums and blogs will allow you to include a link in your "sig file" or signature at the end of your post. BE SURE TO READ THE RULES for each forum or blog and FOLLOW THE RULES! Failure to read and follow the forum or blog guidelines will result in Banishment, Public Humiliation or BOTH!
Keep in mind that the search engine spiders are looking for relevant links from other sites into your site. When you post to forums, blogs and newsgroups, you are creating just the kind of "back links" the spiders love to see! Remember, too, that the more often you post, the more you are providing the spiders with the Fresh Content they crave.
Posts to forums and blogs will get spidered very quickly because this kind of site has new content being added all the time. The spiders literally never leave some of the busier sites. So when you post to a well trafficked forum or blog, your post will get spidered almost immediately. When the spiders follow your link, they will also spider your site.
